so what do you do when the tow rig brakes while pulling your trailer? yaya, your gonna say it aint broke, but when they get old,. something will fail, sometime, **** happens no matter how carefully you maintain and watch it. do you dump the trailer, and have a wrecker come get the tow rig, and have somehaul the treailer home? call your buddies and tell them to bring there trailer to haul your truck home? try to fix the truck on the side of the road? or call a large wrecker to tow the whole combo as one home?
Hasn't happened to me or anyone that I know except for a wreck that I know of. A bunch of the guys in our snowmobile group were all hammered down through Idaho with their 3/4t-1tons with 4 place enclosed sled trailers (most are about 24-27ft tandems that weigh about 6-7K) and one guy hit black ice and rolled the pickup and trailer. The pickup was too damaged to continue and was hauled off but they rolled the sled trailer back rubber down, flipped the sleds back over that flipped and tossled in the trailer, and one of the guys in the group double backed after dropping his sled trailer in the nearest town and picked up the "wrecked" trailer. If I broke down I'd probably get towed with a standard tow truck with the trailer and all.
So far I've only had minor stuff like separated tires and things I could keep rolling. Another guy had a fuel filter plug up from fuel bought in BFE, but had a spare. That kind of thing. I know (or know of) people who've had fuel pump failures on CTD, injector failures on DMax or PS, that type of thing, and the only thing you can do is hire a heavy tow rig to pull you in to town. If he can't or won't take you hooked up, you'll have to find a way to go back for the trailer. That's one good reason to keep the tow rig in top form, no corners cut...
If the Dodge Dually ever breaks down. I just get the other tow rig. My wife's Ford Excursion. Both are set-up to tow everything I have currently. Obviously if/when I get a gooseneck or 5th wheel this won't workrotfl
call up damier crystler and use the extended warenty i paid for... they will tow me to a hotel and pay for it as long as it takes to fix the truck, OR take me where i need via rental, contractor that they pay for....imp: grant
My Dodges have never left me on the side of the road, but if one ever does I'll call Good Sam ERS (Emergency Road Service) and take advantage of the premiums I've been paying for all these years. waytogo Rusty
when it has I was luckily towing light and had a friend bring his sub up to get the boat while I waited for the tow. Every other time I nursed the load home then got the truck to the shop. Once I got the boat back from the lake, started the 2 mile drive to the shop and I lost all oil presure. BTW this was all one issue with the truck, the shop just couldn't fix everything at once. So far (knock on wood) the truck hasn't failed towing heavy or more than 20 miles from home. I'm waiting for the day though. I'll be calling the boss to come get the trailer and to pay for my tow home.
If I cant fix it on the side of the road then thats what AAA is forimp: If I am pulling my Jeep and AAA wont take the trailer as well, and argueing that the $50 a year Ive paid for the last 4 years should cover it doesnt work, then I will roll the Jeep off of the trailer and use it to tow the trailer home.
At Divide Ride this year in July (before I got my CTD) we had the engine in the '98 start ticking and making aweful noise, and I didn't trust it to get us home pulling 4 big mountain passes w/ 8000lbs on the hitch. We got lucky and my parents were also there and towed the '81 home w/ their '04 CTD (300 miles) turned around to get the '98 (300 miles) went back home again, and then they went back 300 miles again back to pick up their camper & Jeep. 1200 extra miles out of their way & 24 extra hours to help us but they got us home. After that we said to hell w/ an old gasser tow rig, and bought the '05 Dually
heres my rescue vehicle from work. has no problem handling my 1 ton and a 15k trailer behind it all as one peice. i just need to cut the ends off some old 10.25 axleshafts that i have and carry them in the toolbox so that way i can just unbolt my fords axles and slide them out and install the caps to hold the gear oil in, as they are o ring sealed, so its an easy job. pulling the driveshaft out is a PITA on the roadside in comparison.
