Advantages, Dissadvantages? I see that Wally World sells it at a decent price and am thinking of switching to it especially for the synthetic values. I know cummins recommends 15W-40 and this stuff is 5W-40, I am also sure that lots of folks are running it, just not sure if in a CTD or not. If running it with a stock filter, how often would one change the oil/filter? One more, Can you burn synthetic in an oil burner stove? I save all my used oil for my buddy who burns it, my guess is NO but thought I'd ask. thanks
THe Rotella synthetic will be a definant improvement over conventional petroleum for sure, you could double your oil change intervals. 5W-40 is really only neccessary for cold weather IMHO. Now if you'd like to step up from a so so synthetic to a longer lasting and cleaner oil than I reccommend Amsoil. THey offer both 15W-40 and 5W-30 full synthetics and synthetic blend diesel oils. Paired up with a better Donoldson Endurance filter and you can triple your change intervals or change annually. Amsoil is the cleanest oil on the market. Redline is a great synthetic but it's more expensive. I'm pretty sure you can burn synthetic oil, should be fine.https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/ame.aspx
I use the Rotella T synthetic with 5 to 6k intervals on changes. I just can't bring myself to fork over the dough for Amsoil, much less go that long without changing oil. It just doesn't seem right (not that it's wrong - I just can't wrap my little brain around it), and I wouldn't have records for oil changes at factory recommended intervals, which I fear might cause issues if I ever have problems down the road. Marc
You change at 5K with synthetic? You might as well just run petroleum if you change that often. You should be able to go nearly 15K on Rotella and 25K on Amsoil. If you don't believe me have your oil sample tested. Now the intervals for a warranty is another issue, for that I would save my money and run petroleum and change oil like you do.
I would suggest if your going to go 25k that you change your filter at 12.5 just run a wix or some other regular style filter all youd have to do is fill up the filter and top of your oil. dirt in your your oil is the number one cause of engine failure you can never be to carefull about your engine oil.
Cool, I bought the 5w-40 synthetic and I run a donaldson filter already. What is the difference between the regular Donaldson and the Endurance filter. Part #??? It was -10 the other night so I figure 5w-40 should be a help on the starting aspect.
The Endurance filters are designed to go the distance as the oil. Infact, Amsoil's EAO filter line is guaranteed for 25K, but reccommend the Donoldson Endurance filters over their line for certain applications, like the CTD, because the Endurances are even better. The Endurance filters are $22 for a Cummins and the Napa/Wix CTD filters are about $15, but would require two of them to last as long as Amsoil diesel formulas. The filter media in the Endurance is different and is supposed to be able to hold more material than the standard lines due to a more consistant media size and shape. They use Nanofiber synthetic filter media over cellulose that resists fiber breakdown over a long period of time. Click http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/elf.aspx for more complete info on the Endurance line. The Endurance part # for a CTD is 7349. AS far as the -10* weather, I'd agree, infact I'd be running 5W-30 in weather that is consistantly that cold.
change my fords every 3k with rotela T. oil is cheap, it keeps it new, and it keeps my injectors happy.
