"Best" is highly dependant on what you want to use it for, and what further modifications you have , or plan to do. Yes, TTS is awesome, and they make a ton of power (especially the Extreme - holy cow!), but they can also smoke a stock tranny VERY quickly.

Tell us more about what you do and plan to do with your truck, and what you want to enhance, and maybe we can give you some more specific input?

OK, one penis extension, coming up.

Edge with attitude, turn up the low boost fueling to 5 to get it to waste fuel (smoke) like mad. Watch out for power levels above 3, you will smoke your tranny if you're too hard on it.

Wanting to smoke all the local boys is a tall order - we have no idea what the local boys have! ATS or Suncoast tranny rebuild and a TTS Extreme is pretty much the order for that. 800hp anyone?

You control low boost fueling on the Edge unit.

Go to the LB7 forums (they have a couple, you'll see what I mean). Be prepared for LOT'S of reading. Otherwise, PermanentMarker is right on the $$$.

Edge Juice (hot Juice if you upgrade the tranny) with the Attitude monitor was the best when I researched mine. They have all sorts of config available from Low Booste Fueling to "defuel above set EGT", defuel on specific shifts, defuel is trans slip detected, and so on. Their "torque management" (which covers more than I listed) goes a long way to keeping things alive, even with stock Alli, while letting you have some fun and hold speed on the passes even loaded while (theoretically) getting better fuel mileage. However, if your like me, don't expect to get the "better mileage" claimed by some... I can't seem to keep my foot out of it long enough to find out if those claims are true. :D

The Duramax is building big power these days, more than the transmission and turbo is able to handle, the problem with the tranny is mostly the overdrive and the turbo is overspinning it and the obvious EGT limitations.

We just did an article that should be released soon on a 2004 LB7 Duramax, the truck has more toys on it than I care to list but most of the power is from a Edge hot Juice stacked with an BD Intimidator, the article was focusing on BD's transmission and convertor coupled with the new BD turbo charger. The turbocharger performed better than we imagined with Jay's 40" tires and both the Edge chip and Intimidator turned all the way up we were not able to get over 900 degrees of EGT. Without EGT being the limiting factor anymore what a rocket!

Sorry Joe very little smoke with the D-Max turbo

Is installing a programmer just a matter of pluggin in and picking a spot to mount the controller? Just wondering whether to be lazy and take it in somewhere, or just order online and install myself.

    The Bd Intimidator

The BD Intimidator is a simply install tuner, plug it into the diagnostic port, turn the key on, follow the on board instructions, select your HP level, unplug and stow away until you would like change levels or go back to stock.

    Here is a link...

Order it online and install it yourself. You will be downloading yourself after the first time anyway and they have very simple instructions.

2 main types. The "programmers" just plug in and upload, then set it on a shelf in the house till you want to change something. No mounting. A chip, like my Edge, you disconnect the ECM harness under the hood, plug the "chip" in the middle, then mount it somewhere. I mounted mine under the corner brace right by the brake booster. Either way, it couldn't get much easier, no way I would pay someone...
