my 1999 f-250 7.3 Turbo Diesel on occasions will emit a strong smell of diesel fuel in the cab and linger for a while after being parked. Upon restarting and driving it seems to clear. It only does it once in a while, anyone got a clue?
Look under the front of the engine for a dripping from the tube that hooks to the drain valve for the filter. The "o" rings are probably leaking on the drain valve. This problem is caused by ULSD fuel. Here is a link to the fix. CLICK HERE
yep thats most likely your problem, ours was doin the same thing and it was the filter drain. its about 70 bucks at the ford dealer. and thats the only place u can get it.
Filter I have yet to find the filter but I am taking the truck in to get a tranny cooler line leak fixed tomorrow, so I will get to look up under there at that time. At 75 years of age and a stove up body I don't particularly relish having to crawl under that engine compartment.
The fuel filter is under the plastic cover dead center of the engine when you open the hood. You have to remove two nuts to get the cover off. I believe the cover says Powerstroke Diesel on it. Bet you leak is a power-steering line or power-steering cooler leak. The tranny coolers are pretty bulletproof.
Blue Ridge Runner, Filter location Blue Ridge Runner, Thank's again for the input. I must have had a short between the headset when reading your initial response. I found the filter and drain valve. I also felt and saw signs of leakage at the filter and down below where the drain line is. {probably what I thought was the tranny filter lines leaking) I will look over the "fix" that you posted for me to see if I want to try it. But most likely willl turn it over to the experts as I am a real short dude and even with a box to stand on I can see where it will be very difficult for me to change that valve out. Whatever way it gets done, I really do want you to know that I appreciate your time and expertise in pointing me in the right direction. Call McMaster Carr, they have a wide selection of o-rings. PTFE, Viton, or Buna-N are all diesel fuel compatible. Price wise they are cheaper than Fords replacement for 50$.
