just bought a 03 ford f-350 psd with an extended warranty. I was going to add a4 inch exaust, air intake ,performance tuner, etc.only to find out that any modifications will void my warranty,i dont want to turn my truck into a race machine i just wanted to add some stuf to make towing my 30 foot 5er a little easyer on the truck. I see a lot of mods on newer trucks are people voiding their warrantys right off the showroom floor or is there a way around this problem.any help with this problem would be great mike s scubamike@netcnct.net
A 4" exhaust and air intake "should not" void your warrenty at all. As far as a tuner, be sue to find a programer that does not leave a trace.
Might want to check w/owners of modified trucks in the area to see if there is a sympathetic dealer/service manager.
Warranties apply only to 'materials and workmanship'. According to the Magnusson - Moss warranty act, your warranty cannot be voided by simply using an aftermarket part. Also, the factory cannot mandate the use of any specific part or product (and refuse to honor warranty work uless you use it ) unless they give it to you for free. However, if an aftermarket part or product causes any damage, you are SOL. But again, simply using an aftermarket part wil not void anything.
Don't quote me on this but if I remember correctly there was a big deal about modifications to vehicles and warranties some time ago. If I remember right it is up to the manufacture to prove that the modifications that you did to your rig caused the malfunction. For example, an exhaust and an intake could not be the culprit of a brake faliure. Unless the exhaust was in some way linked to the failure. Now, I would guess that the manufacture would be willing to go to court on some of the repairs. But, if you are serious enough they may back down and just replace the part.
Bottom line here, intake and exhaust you are almost always safe. Now, if you blow a turbo and they find leaves and sticks in the intake piping, you might have to cover that yourself. Common Sense should be in the picture here. As for the tuner, basically its play at your own risk. Yes, the law protects you, but you have to get the laws to work for you too, and usually they have much more money than you to fight it. Best to either find a good servicing dealer that is a little lenient on upgrades, keep the units to safe levels, and easily removed units. Is this a 6.0 or 7.3?
So if the dealer finds a pigeon jammed in my turbo because I've got a K&N filter....will they still honor my warranty?rotfl
