Looking at 12V's again, found a clean 97 with an auto (47re, right?), if I want to turn the power up a bit, what aftermarket trans should I be looking at? Is one manufacturer better than the other?

What kind of power is the stock transmission (assuming it's in good shape) capable of handling? How about with an aftermarket TC and VB?

What kind of coin is an aftermarket trans (with TC) going to run?

At first, I'd just be doing some mild mods, but down the road I'd like to get a bit more out of it, but nothing outrageous, probably 800 ft-lb or so tq. Economy is definately a priority.

A good cooler and temp gauge will definately be installed first thing.

    Good questions.

Basically, anything over about 75-100hp over stock and its going to live a very short life. 12v trucks can be made to build a lot of power at a low rpm, and that is what will kill the transmission the fastest without help.

With a triple disc converter and a VB upgrade, you can handle about 150 additional hp. Maybe more, depending on the condition of the cluthes and seals. You will need to consider your options carefully. You don't want to be into this transmission more often than you need to.

If you are going to go with a complete unit, I like Dave Goerend for a good price and awesome warranty. Next up is HTS, and Suncoast. BD builds a pretty darned nice unit as well. I prefer to stay away from ATS.

Price is pretty even, depending on options. I can't post pricing out in the open, but if you want a more specific price range feel free to pm me.

Thanks for the reply. Been looking for a 12V for awhile now, I'd prefer the 5-speed, but they are just about impossible to find that aren't beat to death or have lots of miles. I have spotted a few autos now and again, so I'm beginning to consider one. I've considered a 6-speed 24V, but I really want the P-pump, and converting is going to cost quite a bit.

I'm looking for a clean 4x4 with under 150K, the lower the better. That's a pretty tough find unless you've got 20K to spend.

Tell me about it. I have been looking for a first gen with a stick and lower miles and they are hard to find.
