Hi, I have a 1993 Ford F-150. I love this truck. The only problem I have at the moment is the 4.9 straight six it has over 270,000 miles, it runs pretty strong right now, but it shuts down every once in a while. It will eventually need to be replaced should I get a rebuilt 4.9 or get myself a cummins 4Bt, I plan to put a manual on it either way This is my first posting. I like what towrig is about. I believe I will enjoy this forum and this will probably be the only forum I will attend.

First and foremost welcome to the Tow Rig Forums!!! Next is the idea of swapping in a Cummins 4bt into your ford. I am not sure what the value of your truck is, personal value or retail wise, but if it was me I would think about either selling the truck and purchasing a truck that you want or trade in the truck for what you are wanting. I don't want you to think that it is impossible to do what you want. Quite the oppisite. It is just that you are looking at a lot of work. However, if you are serious about the swap this would be a good place to start http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/index.php I am sure that the folks here may be able to help you.

It is more of a personal value for me. I will never sell this truck, I am willing to work whatever hours are necessary. I want to keep this truck because I am very proud of it and it is paid off, so I really have no reason to get rid of my truck. What kind of trans do you recommend. Thanks for your response, I appreciate it.

Go with the NV4500 if you can find one for a good price.

Yeah, that is what I thought, but my truck is a 2wd, I do not know how common a 2wd NV4500 is. This might be a stupid question, but do I need to get custom tanks fabricated or do I order diesel tanks that would go on a F-250 from the same year?

I don't think that you will need custom fuel tanks. The only thing different from the gas and Diesel tank, that I am aware of anyways, is the filler neck. The filler neck is a larger bore than the gas filler tank. I think this is done to prevent Diesel fuel being put into a gas tank. Only problem is that you can still put gas in a diesel tank. I converted a Diesel Chevy to a gas motor and other than flushing the tanks well I had no problems. Does your truck currently a standard transmission or an automatic? Did you like the site that I refered you to? Did it help at all?

My truck is a automatic, I am starting to have mixed feelings about going between manual or automatic, I starting changing my mind after I went to suncoast's website and they had E40D kits, I just want the most miles out of this set up. The website that you reffered to me is alright, it is just a little confusing and hard to navigate, not as clean as towrig. I have not blogged on the site yet. I am sorry I took so long I went to vote. So which do you thik will put the most miles out of the setup rebuild the E40D or get a NV4500

The tranny question is a hard one to answer. I don't know which one would last longer. But, since your truck is already an automatic I guess that is what I would stay with. Is your stock tranny a E40D by chance? If so then that is what I would stick with. It is better to stick with the devil you know than one you don't. Besides, you will be doing a lot of changes on your rig already. You can always change the tranny later if you don't like what you have and if you already have the E40D then why change it now. Try it out first and see if you like the way it works. If not then you can change it later.

Yeah that is a better idea, the trans is a E40D, I know cause I had to replace the fluid in it when I got it I do not need to worry about the expense of getting the manual and a manual steering column, and dash. I do not want my truck loking out of place inside the interior. I am sure you are a subscriber to Diesel Power mag, did you see that bronco that had the 4Bt, I do not want or can I afford to radically modify the engine like that but I would like it to produce close to or over 400 pounds of torgue. Iunderstand that the 4Bt came in a bunch of commerical rigs, which rigs or is there a supplier of diesel engines, has anyone ordered a diesel from Jasper if they offer it.

I did see the Bronco. I think that you are on the right track as far as your rig goes. Let us know how it turns out. Post up on the forum and show us some pictures.

Thanks for your help and advice. It is in the planning stages. I want to try to get all the parts necessary, before the beginning or middle of the summer. I will be out of college in may, so I will only have my job to worry about, not college. I will be posting pictures.

It will take a little while, I hope to start this project by the beginning of summer or end of may when I am finished with college for the summer. Until then I am going to be searching around for the engine. I will post the pics.
