I read an arcticle in an old Fourwheeler about adding propane to a 1999 Ram Cummins they had.

Does the propane actually pull down EGT's or at least help keep them under control? It would seem that if it's making all the diesel burn than it would keep raw fuel from entering the manifold and turbo. Seems it would help control smoke too.

Reason I ask is because I have Marco's CATCHER ecm and maybe 275HP injectors planned sometime in the future, after I get DTT 47RE. That would put me around 350HP and am afraid I might have problems with the stock turbo getting warm on me and thought propane might be just enough to keep the EGT's under control on long grades. Plus that would put me at 400+HP. :pimp:

I want to avoid going with an aftermarket larger turbo and different air box because it's expensive and I hear a big turbo and air box adds a lot of interior noise. No thank you on more noise!

Hmm, I have well over 400 hp (depending on my mood) with no noise problems and nothing but a chip. :pimp: :stir:

    Sorry, couldn't resist...

But seriously, propane can certainly reduce EGTs (depending on ratios) for exactly the reasons you mention. And likewise, it can be used to tune out the smoke by reducing the "over fueled" problem. My biggest problem with propane is giving up the bed space (or spare) and having yet another tank to deal with getting filled, lines and valves to have problems with, and so on.

If I were running a CTD, I think I would be looking into the sewer pipe exhaust with fire-ringed head and Piers duel turbo option just from a (relative) simplicity and functionality stand point.

Sure, I could go the easy route too and just buy a Comp box and have almost as much HP as you and just as much torque.....but like you I couldn't use the big power setting anyway. :D

I want to keep the stock turbo and have no intentions on fire ringing anything nor do I need to.

even at 400HP on propane, I wouldn't be pushing all that much boost, probably not anymore than 35psi.

I agree on the tank. I think I would go with a single tank to help save space. I don't plan on flowing a lot anyway, just when I am under hard throttle to help keep it cool and grab a few extra ponies. Plus, I have a tool box in mind and I think a long skinny tank would fit under a box. [thinking]

Generally speaking how many degrees do most people see in EGT drop?

Yes Propane does lower EGT's and does boost your Hp and torque. Down side most setups I have seen you have to install a propane tank some place on the Rig.

I would do Methanol Injection Adds approx 100 hp and more torque keeps EGT's lower than propane no added propane tanks. I like the Meth injection uses small washer fluid tank or tap into your washer fluid tank and your good to go.
Setup runs approx $400.00 and uses basic off shelf washer fluid.

Someone completely, and detailed, describe how methanol injection works and what it does. I have an idea, basically water that goes in with the air/fuel and helps keep it cooler but don't know the details on it.

Not to contradict what INTERCEPTOR says, but I think the most you'll see out of a stock motor is 30-40 horse on the power increase. Still very good for lowering the EGT's if setup right.
