I saw one of thease for the first time. The front axel is as wide and the DRW rear. The bed looks identical to a 3500DRW. The one I saw was a 4500Durmax...I wonder if the Allison is used in thease rigs? If so are they differnt than the one in my rig?
Anyway thought it was cool waytogo :pimp:

Far as I know they use the Allison in those models too, but it's a bigger model. Not sure on that though.

I do know that a lot of them use the larger displacement inline 6 (cough cough) Duramax instead of the V8 model. :D

Ya it just had a Duramax badge on the fender so I have no idea if it's the same as mine or what

My neighbor (Chev salesman) has been trying to get me to buy one. The 4WD has a solid axle, V8 Duramax (same as the pickups) and a "beefier" Allison trans than the one available in the pickups. Says it solves all my 'beefs' about the 2500-3500 Chev trucks  {but I'd hate to even mention I was thinking about buying a 'commercial' truck to my insurance agent}. Feels like a van chassis from the drivers seat.

My friend has one of those...a '05 4500 Crew cab 4x4 with a custom utility body on the back. He uses it for work, towing his 40' fifth wheel, and the DD stuff. He also built a custom rack for it that goes over the cab to hold 4 quads while he tows the fifth wheel. Pretty crazy setup. He weighed it once and all loaded up with the quads on the truck and the sandrail in the Fifth wheel it weighed 38,000lbs  It also has the Duramax (same as the pickups) and Allison transmission. He has an Edge Attitude w/ Juice on it and pulled the whole rig to colorado and back only dropping to 42mph on the steepest part of the Rockies. Pretty insane setup for sure.

Oh yeah the front axle is a specially built Dana 70 with longer axle tubes.

    Ya that thing is sweet!
I would guess you need a Class A drivers licence for it?
When I win the lotto I'll get me one :pimp:

Some dude in my town bought a red 4 door one and it's his DD. No bed on it yet but I assume he's going to put a pickup bed on it.

It would have been cool if GM used the light truck cab with that config, like Fords medium duty.

I still don't get that... The bed is too high to be useful, can't pull a normal fifth wheel, can't pull a normal gooseneck, too high to hand load materials and tools into... It's just another, hey look at me! status symbol I guess

Now see at least the fords are useful, there not really any higher than a normal f350 so they can be used.

Some of them have the 6.6 V8, some have the 7. something inline 6, and the lucky ones have a C7 in them. ;)

Nah, your class C still covers that truck. I drive my F600 service truck all the time, it's a few weight ratings higher than the Kodiaks, and I am fine with my class C.

From what I remember It's a certain weight that distinguishes what class license it takes to operate the vehicle. But.....even if the vehicle weighs under what the max for a "C" is, if the rig has air brakes a class C driver is out of the question. You have to have air brakes on your license, which is getting into class B IIRC. I may be off though, we only have one medium duty rig and the F600 still has fluid brakes so I know I'm fine. The rest of our rigs are class 8 which requires a class A license, I'm not real familiar with everything between.

I completely agree....the Kodiaks rate up there with the H2 Hummers in my opinion. First off I don't need a vehicle that big to just daily drive.

I actually have looked into the medium trucks, since my Case Backhoe and gooseneck is pushing what even a 1 ton dually can handle. Regardless, the Ford Superduty F550 was the only truck I considered/would consider. The Kodiak is big, ugly, and kind of useless IMHO.

One thing about the Kodiak, atleast the one I saw, the bed was not high at all. Unlike thoes other 'pickup bed' monster CAT powered whatever they are called with the big barrel gas tank exposed, now thoes have pickup beds that are WAY too high for a fithwheel. I'm not saying I would want one but I do remember thinking to myself how it looks just like a 3500DRW with a HUGE crewcab. :doah: So with that the Kodiak would work fine for a fith wheel or slide-in camper. Look at the white one at the begining of this post, see the bed is relitivly low, again compared to the CAT trucks. Was it FORD that has thoes? Time for google waytogo  :stir:

My buddy has an 05 4500 and tows his 38' fifth wheel toy hauler all over the country. The useful part of it is that you have air brakes, more load capacity, and better visiblity than is a 2500/3500. The damn springs in the thing are huge so it packs the weight like a champ. We put an AERO Muffler on the thing trying to get some better milage out of it. I don't think I will be buying one (needs a bigger powerplant) but I think it is a really cool concept.

If a guy needs something bigger than a 1 ton THIS is the truck to have. It COULD be daily driven and is not overly large. Plus it's got a heck of a lot better body style than the ugly Kodiaks.

The ONLY thing I like about the Kodiaks is that you can get a C7 Cat in them, but thats it. I'll pull your typical Dodge owner.....I like the motor (C7, not the Dmax) but the rest is junk. rotfl

Burt, you are thinking of the International CXT's that are HUGE.

The only thing I can say is, I'd like to nab a front axle setup out of one of those and put it under my 2500!

And while we're sort of on the subject, why can't IH make a regular sized pickup like they used to? They make those giant monstrosities but won't consider a light duty? I bet they would sell like crazy.

Good question, it kind of falls under the same thing as....why can't the Asians build a pickup larger than a 1/2ton, and with a diesel, in America? Don't know. If IH made pickups again, I'd hope they'd be a little prettier than their original line.... :doah:
