So how long typically does a set of shocks last on our larger, heavier pickups? I've got 116K on my '01 Ram and doubt the shocks have ever been replaced. They don't "feel" worn out but am curious of what mileage most folks change them out.

In my opinion, asking 40--50k miles out of OEM shocks is really pushing the limit. Factors such as everyday road conditions, amount of towing, truck weight, etc. etc. can even reduce the above mileage figures. Shocks wear out over such a gradual period of time that it goes unnoticed until the new ones are on the truck.

Then that probably means my truck doesn't have factory shocks.

My bet is if you replace them, you will notice a huge different.
