Can't help you on the tow ratings, but Id say 16ft should be enough for a Bronco. If you go a bit longer, like 18ft it would give you a bit more room to balance the load. Of course a set of air bags on the rear of the truck would help tremendously as well. Another alternative is a WD hitch setup. Dont worry about towing with a 1/2 ton, itll work out fine, despite what others might say. Just take your time and think things through. waytogo

I'm still thinking half ton but I would like to get a newer gen 97 up with 5.4 triton and straight shift keep it two wheel drive and lower it for stability with bags.

If by straight shift you mean a 5spd manual, you can forget about it with the 5.4L. Ford never offered a manual transmission behind the 5.4L in a 1/2 ton pickup, or the LD F250. You need to move up to a 99+ SD to get a manual behind the 5.4L.

Ford claims that the Mazda 5spd trans used behind the 4.2L V6 and the 4.6L V8 cant handle the torque of the 5.4L. Whether this is true or not, there is nothing that can be done about it. Believe me, back when we had our F150s, I wished time and time again that the 5spd was offered with the bigger V8, but the little 4.6L did ok, even when grossing 14k with a trailer
