Is there any bad effects to taking off the silencer ring on your turbo? I've heard some people say it will damage your turbo and others say that it does nothing but make it louder (which is what i want). Has anybody here taken there's off?

Take it out if you want, I just took mine out a few weeks ago. I noticed nearly no difference in turbo whine. The only difference I could actually hear was that I could hear the turbo just SLIGHTLY better when it was just starting to spool up, otherwise full boost isn't any louder.

I don't know who told you that you couldn't take it out, I've never seen anything else with a silly ring stuck in the intake side before.

The silencer ring causing damage if removed is a myth.....the only application I have come across in which a Holset turbo has a silencer ring is on a Dodge CTD.

When I removed mine I couldn't hear a difference. When I put in the AFE intake and torque tube wholly moly! Sounds like a jet engine. Me likes :pimp:

Its amazing how much noise that factory box absorbs. I did find the easiest way to get that lil bugger out, though! I just put in a new turbo!
As far as I know, there is no performance or reliability gain or loss with or with out that thing, it just makes the truck a little quieter for the crowd that doesn't like ripping and snorting down the road like most of us do.

ya it was pretty easy to take the thing out on mine... i just removed the intake tube and worked the little ring that holds it in there out w/ a screwdriver then it basically fell out waytogo

If you drive an 03 or newer there is another step you can take to make your turbo louder that will make it louder than taking you turbo ring out. If you look down the tube that runs from your air intake box to your turbo theres a cross like piece of plastic you can take it out or beat it out and it to will make your turbo even louder:stir:

    turbo ring

I had a heave truck mechanic tell me about this ring and i went home and took my k&n intake off and did not see the ring in the turbo. Is there one in the 600 series motors?

Yes there is, I have an 06 and it is now missing one. With the K&N it sure makes alot of noise with no ring! It may be hard to see but there is a little snap ring in there that holds it in. The silencer ring itself looks like part of the turbo, flat screwdriver and pair of needle nose will get you on your way. waytogo
