I will be flat towing my Jeep to Colorado in a few weeks with my truck and Have a couple of questions... 1) Should the towbar be level or angled slightly up or down towards the truck? 2) Will I be fine leaving the T-Case in Neutral and the trans in Park for the 1200mile trip? Or will that damage the T-Case? Thanks in advance for your help!! opcorn:
Suggestion I'd go over to jeepforum.com and ask them. They will have bigger knowledge base concerning flat towing a jeep. Do you know what T-Case is in yours? I've started researching buying a used TJ to build as a toy and one of the things I remember running across is that the NP231 T-Case in the TJ's can come apart because of axle wrap when flat towed. I'm just a newbie to the jeep scene though so I may be wrong, but I'd check it out first. I believe Teraflex has a fix for it though.
I flat towed my K5 to Moab about 450 miles away and back. I just removed the driveshafts, it's easy and that way you don't have to worry about anything. If you have a Haynes manual it might give you the factory's say on flat towing. Chevy said my K5 should only be flat towed for no more than 50 miles and no faster than 55mph IIRC?? I figure with the driveshafts removed, it can't hurt anything. Also when you attach the brackets I would put it as level with your hitch to allow for up and down travel over bumps and entering/exiting parking lots and the such. I never towed more than 65 MPH just for my own reasons. I don't feel comfortable dragging all that weight behind me at 75MPH
I flat tow my jeep on a regular basis. Things Id recommend you do, and you shouldnt have any problems. T case in nuetral, tranny in park, disconnect both driveshafts, and make sure the key is turned so your steering wheel on the jeep doesnt lock up.. that makes for no fun going around corners.. ask me how I found that out Scott
