Is it me or are you guys tring to come up with reasons to pull something?? Its seems funny that ya'll all have diesel trucks but it doesnt seem like any of them get used for anything other than heavy grocery hauling duties and and the occasional camping trip....could have saved some money and bought a gas burner
Well with a diesel pick up if the SHTF I can always get fuel from the trucks that park in the yard where I park my big rig. After what just happened in NO thats enough reason right there. I know I could get enough fuel to drive a 1K miles. :doah:
Who do you think you are to make a judgement like that? Have you personally followed many of us around to see what we use our trucks for? I think not. Many of us daily drive our diesel pickups, and pull our toyhaulers, RV trailers, flatbeds, snowmobile trailers...etc. We use them for exactly what they are designed for. Not all of us are hot shotters...
I tow a 15k Fifth wheel. You may use your truck for work, I use mine for fun. Don't you have better things to do? If I was pulling heavy loads for a living, I'd have a class 8, not a civvie-issue diesel. Marc
No, I don't look for reasons to tow something. I tow with it if I need to, and I go to the mall or get groceries in it if I need to. That's why I got what I did; it's a true multi-purpose vehicle that will do pretty much anything I ever want to do with it... Could it be more power, more fun, better fuel mileage, better longevity, and power/capability to spare when I do need to haul 15k while gaining 5000 ft of altitude going up Sunset Point at a 4-6% grade or other places like that when I want? Or should I have saved a few thou and bought a half ton gasser to struggle along towing at 35 mph up the multitude of grades around here, stressing out the engine and drive train in 110*+ temps, just so that people like you can feel more smug with yourself for "using" your truck more? I also own a Supercharged GTP with "comp-g" option pack, but since I don't race it as often as take it to the store, I guess I should have just gotten a Cobalt instead? I've owned a multitude of trucks ranging from 1/4 ton to 1.5 tons. Every time I've owned a truck lighter than what I now have, there are times I find myself wanting more. So, just like tools in my shop, or parts on my truggy, or my guns, I buy based on the most aggressive and taxing requirement I think that I will require out of them. That way, most of the time they are working well below "duty cycle" or maximum capacity, but when I *DO* need that extra capacity, I'm not let down...
class 8 the only problem with a class 8 truck is fuel cost and consumption, insurance cost, fuel, cost of maintenance, fuel, ungodly truck payments, fuel, low freight prices for big trucks, fuel, oh yeah and otr time involved in paying for all of it.... did i mention fuel
You dink around with 1 ton pickups moving 15K or so around at a time bragging about it when we move 48-60K on one truck at a time. It pays to have a real rig if you plan on actually moving a decent amount of freight, unless all you do is ship motorcycles, various powersports materials, and small logistics shipping. You make a claim of how much it costs to run a class 8 truck. What does your pickup actually get for mileage loaded to it's max? 12mpg? Maybe? We get 6, maybe 7mpg at full weight. Thats only twice the fuel consumption as you but at a rate of nearly four times the amount of product being shipped on the truck in a single trip. FOr you to move as much material from point A to B would take you almost twice as much fuel as one class 8 truck, since you'd have to make nearly four trips....
well the weight of freight might actually matter if i was paid by the weight. i dont' know any car haulers who get paid based on weight. i dont dispute the fact that i cant haul 40k-60k but i dont have to either. if i was having to rely on hauling 40k-60k to make any money id definately have to have a big rig, but for what i do i prefer to haul the smallest stuff possible because i get paid the same for hauling a fullsize trucks as i do hondas.
If my truck can't make $85.00+ per hour I'm not turning the key. The cost of fuel, tires, insurance, etc. dictates this.
