Just wondering if any of you guys have done a 4x4 conversion on your truck, and how hard it was. I am thinking of doing one to my 1991 dodge d250 cummins. I have all the tools, and i will be getting a parts truck if i do it, and just switching everything in the front end over. My main reason for doing this is because i do not want to drive this 4x2 in the snow. The truck was bought to haul my 86 k10 wheeling truck. Do you think this swap is worth it? If i do not, i will be loading my bed with about 800 lbs of sand, and putting on some tire chains, and a limited slip. How would this go in the snow?

Older trucks like that are relatively simple to do the swaps on. If you can get a parts truck and have all the tools and skills than I say go for it. It sucks trying to go up hills in the snow w/only 2wd. Putting on chains is a PITA and all tow rigs should be 4wd anyways. I have never done a 4wd swap but it should be a pretty much bolt in swap.

yeah... if all tow rigs should be 4x4 tell that the the Semi Drivers....

im not sure how hard it is on your year or make truck. if it was a chevy, it would be easy, i can tell ya that. like said before if you have the parts and the skill do it!!

but beware, your tow rig will handle the trailer in a much different way. just take it slow the first few times towing and also make sure you check the bolts you added and the new welds before you tow.

Another thing to look out for is that the front half of the frame isn't different.

most Semi's are 4 wheel drive the tires are just closer together.rotfl

I put a ford Axle into my jeep which required new wider mounts on the frame and it was easy enough, if the frame is the same as the doner it should be simple. the small stuff is the stuff that makes it fun, like steering and exaust.
