Will a built 700 survive behind a basically stock 454 or should I just rebuild my th350? Yes there is a th350 mated to my 454 pulled out of my 84 z28. it has a 9" tail and set up for full manual reverse shifting. (PRN12D) Also I know that my pickup weighs about 3000 LBS more than the camaro. Any trans pros that can speak up please feel free. there may be others that have pondered the OD setup without the cost of a 4l80 and computer.oke:
come on where are the experts. I figured this would get some discussion about the various trans available, and why or whynot to use them.
I am in the same boat. I have a 454 that had a th350 and I just put in a 700R4. From what I have read if it is built right it should work. Keep the rpm in the right place, keep it cool. The 4L80 is just SOOOOO much more expensive to swap in.
yeah I have both trans and I'm figuring that I'll put the 700 behind an LS1 swapped into the camaro, but found a 5SPD to put behind the bigblock. decided that I didn't want the hassle of reupgrading th ol 700waytogo drained the fluid from the TH350 and saw stuff I didn't like tiny chunks of aluminum and burnt fluid( what should I expect from running 11.63 seconds in the quarter at 117MPH
xtremjepin. I put a stock 700 behind a fairly stock 454 in an old 77 2wd chevy I used to have and it GUTTED it. I went to downshift and pass on the highway and lost the entire tranny. WHOOPS If you do decide to go with the 700 make sure you have a good reputable shop with the knowledge of the 700 do the work (waranty). Now I am looking for a 4l80/4l85 or an nv4500 to put into my 82 CC dually. However fully loaded I am seeing almost 20k pounds. I am really considering a gear vendors (i know expensive) because its rated for the heavy loads and will take my th400 and make it a 6 speed. Any way you decide to go just make sure you build it for how you drive it and the weights you will be carrying.
