Ok, I just started a thread in "Brand Wars" stating why I think GM is better. I still stand by that, how ever, my father has a 98 12 valve 5 speed. Has 4 inch exhaust, intake, and a #10 plate. Trucks runs incredible. I have a 2002 Dmax with an edge chip, and at the 2nd level its 60 hp increase. Stock is 300, so 60 hp increase should be 360 at the flywheel. My truck runs good also, extremly fast and tows like a dream. The other day we raced, off the line I can smoke not even trying, hes gotta shift. But, when he is in 5th, he pulls away from me hard and fast. I cant touch him, not even close. I know if I were in the 90 hp setting (should be 390 at the flywheel) I still couldnt beat him. All he has done is the exhaust and #10 plate. Are 98 12 valves just that incredible, or does he just have one that is meaner than normal? Does this sound normal to any of you?

Sounds like a normal run of the mill Cummins to me. You got introduced to low end torque of the Cummins, which is why it makes sence he smokes you in high gear.

I guess you dont understand exactly how fast the truck actually is. I had a 95 which I had done alot of work to that wouldnt touch this 98. I have buddys with new dodges that have chips and injectors that wont hang with this truck at high gear. Im just curious why this paticular engine is cranking out soooo much power with minor mods.

The 98 5 spd has the 215 hp pump. It has big barrels and plungers, 181 DV's and a different dynamic timing curve. Also, 215 injectors flow more fuel than the 160's or 175's that would have been in your 95. There is a HUGE difference in power between adding a #10 plate to a 160 pump compared to a 215 pump. With some additional timing advance it and pushing the plate farther forward, it isn't difficult to get close to 350 RWHP with a #10 and a 215 pump. It will typically dish out enough torque to fry the stock clutch quickly and make egt's on the toasty side with the stock turbo. All he would have to do to pull away from you in every gear is install 3000 rpm GSK. Add a good clutch and 3rd gear launches can become possible with all that bottom end power.

3rd gen CTD's really aren't rocket ships in this day and age either. I NEVER came across a bombed 3rd gen that I couldn't EASILY beat with my 94......I had my 94 running a 13.90 @ 101 mph with a 10 psi 4WD launch......a 3rd gen has to bring a lot to the table to break into the 13's.

Makes sense. His clutch is stock and he easily spins it when he hits the throttle to hard. I think once he burns up this clutch and puts a beefier one in, he's gonna do injectors.

From what CTD Nut said I don't think I would start with the injectors! A bigger turbo seems to be next in line for an upgrade! But I'm just a Ford guy, what do I know?

Agreed, adding something like 370 marine sticks to a 215 pump will send egt's into orbit without more air and cause a power loss to boot. Even a hybrid HX35 will be past it's limit with that level of fueling.
