i just bought a 96 chevy 1 ton that has the plug under the dash for a brake controller.do i have to buy a brake controller from the dealer, or can i buy one that will plug into the factory plug? also, how do check to see if the brake controller is actually wired into the trailer plug on the truck. right now i get 1 blinker and that is all, so i know the trailer wiring needs to be gone through, just wondering how to check the controller wires... thanks for any tips!

the brake controller manufacturers sell pigtails that will plug in to the factory port...

as far as the controller wires go, they shouldn't control your lights. check the connections under the bed and make sure everything's hooked up right.
