Cummins Inc. said last week that it became the first diesel engine manufacturer to have a product certified to the Environmental Protection Agency's 2010 diesel emission standards. The Cummins 6.7-liter Turbo Diesel, used in the Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks, was certified by the agency as meeting the 2010 diesel engine standards for oxides of nitrogen and particulate matter emissions, according to the company.

The 2010 EPA standards for NOx (0.2g) and PM (0.01g) represent a more than 90% reduction in each pollutant, compared to the 2004 standards, making the engine, ". . . the cleanest heavy-duty diesel engine available in North America," according to the company.

"[This] is an extension of the joint clean diesel development work Cummins and DaimlerChrysler have performed together for nearly two decades," Cummins President and Chief Operating Officer Joe Loughrey said in a release.

The 2010 certification applies only to the engine and its use in the Dodge trucks, according to Carol Lavengood, Cummins' director of marketing communications. L&MT
