Should your rear diff temps be around the same temp as the engine towing? How hot is too hot? It is a 03 Dmax. I have noticed the paint on the diff cover seems to burn off/disapear. I am looking at a maghytec cover but 8 qts. of synthetic kinda hurts. Not sure if that will affect the mileage as well. Whats your thoughts? Any other covers available with a little less capacity?

Same thing here, I cooked the gear lube coming from Disney World in June.
The paint on the rear diff cover looked burnt. Dodge says change gear lube every 15k miles for the AAM 11.5" rearend, (Severe Duty). I think this is way out-of-line. I changed gear lube 2 times in my Ford (10 1/4") before I sold it with 165k miles on it and never had a problem with gear lube overheating.

If need be from the extream temps you can add a oil cooler to the rear diff similar to what circle track cars use.
