Are there aftermarket ones/larger that do a better job of cooling, is there a performance benefit to a larger intercooler?
I'm not aware of any after market intercoolers for any of the modern diesels. Never really noticed anyone saying they needed one or anything... Basically, I don't know except to say if it was an issue, at least for the DMax, I would probably have seen something. Maybe it's just this old age though.
I didn't know, if your adding more horse power maybe it would be a good idea to increase cooling etc.. :dunno:
Yeah, makes sense. But the push-back would come in lack of room and cost. Those stock intercoolers today are massive and there is really no room for bigger, the physical designs are already pretty well optimized, and the materials cost to improve efficiency would be prohibitive. Again, I'm just guessing, but it makes sense from what I think I know... Still, the more I try to remember, I do seem to have a vague recollection of one of the early players trying to do something they thought would improve the intercooler on the DMax, but I'm pretty sure that it came to nothing, and that's assuming it's even a valid memory. Where is that darn'ed bottle of Geritol anyway...
Thanks to the Dmax, us poor guys with a little 6.5 don't have any good aftermarket support for a good intercooler. Some guys have tried sqeezing Cummins or PS intercoolers between the radiator and A/C condensers, but it makes a tight fit.
I thought I read one time that a guy over at TDR.com had a Griffin aluminum intercooler in his Cummins.
