anybody have an opinion on these engines? good or bad? what kinds of trannies came behind these things? im guessing an allison if its an auto, but what about manuals? thanks
I know nothing about a 570 but can say the 466 is a well proven reliable engine that has had little problems. They are very common in medium duty trucks, if not the most widely used engine in MD's. I have a DT429 that is just a slightly smaller version, very good engine and has worked well for me in the ag application it's in. I don't know about the manuals, but I have seen numerous 466's with Allison trans behind them in lots of different applications.
a good motor the 466 is what year you looking at? the older oens. pre 93 i believe are mechnaical pump, VERY simple, make good pwoer and are dependable. newer ones use the same injection system as that year for dpowerstroke diesel, more power, but more complaicated, and more $$. basic engien parts are very cheap, and rebuilds are quite affordable. seen tons of orginial motors over 400k miles on them, running strong. sometimes tempermental in cold weather as far as starting, as seems liek alot failed to get block heaters i nthe mid 90's for some reason, but very easy to install one. you can get a 4. or 5 speed alison behind them, or anythign from a 5 and 2, to a straight 6 speed, a 9 sped, or 10 speed manual.
motor would be an 05 or 06. yeah it has the powerstroke type injection system on it. so rebuild kits are pretty cheap for these motors? anybody fooling around with them power wise? i see the 570 is rated for close to 300 hp and 1050 torque. 466 is down around 290 and 750. seems like a pretty good choice either way. ryan
if you leave them at rated HP you wont melt them down, and can sustain the abuse compared to a turned up big truck which can easily overwork itself.
466's have been around for a long time, I think since the mid 70's in trucks. It's probably my favorite engine, even more-so than the 400hp 97 Dodge/Cummins I sold a few months back. Lots of hp potential if you want to playwaytogo . Some day I'll own one to play with. The one in my avatar is doing me just fine , even if I dont own it(except the #0 fuel plate from my Dodge ).
I have learned more about the INT engines when I started driving for a towing company. I am not sure which engine I like the most, I think that depends on the application. Just as long as it is not a mercedez type engine. That just don't have much for sizes or hp options on those engines. I do work on one of the many merc engines and it isn't fun.
