I have an 05, I think NV5600 not G56 (I hope, shift pattern is R up to the right) It started to make a transmission noise at 85K right in the middle of a 3K trip pulling a trailer. I changed the tranny fluid at 75K. It makes a cyclical bearing noise in R,1,2,and 3rd when accelerating. I have heard rumor that it needs to be overfilled by 1qt. Is it too late now to save it? How hard is a 5600 to replace bearings in? I'm a do-it-yourselfer and am very capable mechanically. Thanks
hmm... you really might want to open this thing up. it is an NV5600, and parts are hard to get. well, hard parts anyway, so you do NOT want to break anything on this... the fluid changed are supposed to be every 25k miles IIRC. i would open it up and see what you can see. do a fluid change, add some fast coolers and try ti then. i do think the extra quart was for the G56... but cant remember...
OVER FILL THE NV5600 BY 1-2QTS!!!!! Ok, that said, here's the deal. You need bearings. I have replaced 2 transmissions for this fault. Sucks, not cheap, but there it is. As for tearing into it, you will need a BIG press. I only have a 20 ton. Not enough. According to NAPC, my powertrain supplier, you need a 50 ton or larger press to get the thing torn down correctly. Hard parts can be had, and I have a local guy now that rebuilds them for me. A reman unit from NAPC is not cheap, but are rebuilt right, and come with a warranty. As for saving yours, sorry, the damage is done, and not reversible. You are explaining to a T the exact issues caused by a failed or failing bearing. You can try and find someone locally to tear into it, but DON'T take it to ATS. They will kill your wallet. Even at my pricing they are too high to sell.
Thanks Diesel Nut for the info, much appreciated! Do you have any suggestions of a good "reasonably priced" tranny shop in colorado? What is a ballpark figure for a rebuild? I'm pulling the tranny and will buy a bearing kit if needed and if I can, just drop it off to be rebuilt. Plus, I might as well do a clutch now too expecially since the bullydog install.
Buddy of mine called the dealership and asked if they could get him a 5600. They quoted him $2800 for a new nv5600. I call BS but try calling your dealer.
I had a used 5600 that I got from a junk yard. It was out of an '05 with 36000 miles on it. They sold it to me for $2800.00 I have since gotten rid of it. But there it is again, not cheap.
I don't know of anyone out your way myself. Like I said, I have a local guy that is real good with these and does'nt charge ma an arm and a leg. If you know someone heading this way, we could probably work something out for you. I do have access to a freshly rebuilt 4x4 NV5600. . . . .
