Ah very helpful as always I see.

You mention you have the extended warranty, I would think that would be up by now as far as years go. Anyway, if it is under waranty the tranny is covered. If it's not your out of luck. But, take it to a good tranny shop and you will be rebuilt for $1200 or so. I'm still on my stock 4l80e in my chevy and it has 170k miles and it towed a 5th wheel the first 70k then it had a camper in the back till 130k then I bought it and beat the poo out if it on the trail. They are a great tranny but things can go wrong.

For those prices, call up ATS and get a much better transmission for the money... Other than that, look for one used?

 That ticks me off! If you can't come up with anything benificial to help the guy, then don't make stupid comments. Didn't your mommy ever teach you manners? rotfl

    2000GMC,

There must have been something wrong with the transmission for it to fail so quick. Unfortunatly on a truck that is now 5 years old I doubt GM will do much for you. :doah: I'd have it rebuilt locally by a good, reputable shop.

Is your burb a 2wd? If so I have a 2wd 4l80e with about 27k miles on it out of a 99 or 00 suburban...

I just find it amazing how many automatic transmissions fail prematurely like this. Very rarely do you hear about this happening to a manual.

Tim lets use the old saying "If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all"

Read it, Learn it, Live by it.

It is the most annoying when people don't have anything to post so they post meaningless drivel just to hear themselves type.

    Back on Subject:

I would take the tranny to a good shop and have it rebuilt. GM is not the best about putting there repalcement trannies together sometimes. I have heard of several 700s that were not assembled correctly and they went out real quick.

Autos are a good reliable tranny despite the fact that some people are ignorant about how they work and how to make them live.
I have seen autos go hundreds of thousands of miles when correctly built by people that were willing to take the time and learn about them.

Sure you do, you hear it all the time. Clutches, pressure plates, pilot bearings, synchros, shaft nuts like the infamous NV4500, slave cylinders, pretty much the whole gamut that matches up pretty well to autos. Autos do tend to be more expensive when they go, and they do require more service, but properly taken care of (coolers, check/change filter, fluid levels, etc.) they often outlast manual clutches with no significant work. My Allison in a mildly bombed GM has already gone further than my neighbors totally stock CTD Dually which actually leads an easier life than my GM. By this point he already had the nut "fixed" 3 times (IIRC), synchro issues, and a clutch failure...

You also forget that there are probably 10 times the amount of autos out there than manual transmissions, compounded that you will likely hear about one failing early on the internet than hearing about one that lasted 230K. Wasn't there just a discussion on internet " failure" percentages vs. actual reality when factored in the total amount of a given vehicle manufactured? Yes, there was.

Take your anti auto attitude elsewhere. Even the manual diehards here don't appreciate it.

Even worse, last i heard only 5% of new vehicles sold are manuals.

And just to stir the pot some more, ~230K on my "weak" 700R4.:stir:

Yup, mine "only" has 135,000 miles so far, using it for towing most of the last 50,000 miles. I am just sure there must be something wrong with it.

131K on my dad's 4L60E in his burb and a whopping 258K and still counting on the "unreliable" E40D behind my grandpa's '95 PSD.

I have never seen any automatic transmission out-last a clutch in a manual tranny vehicle.

Like autos, some manuals have been failure prone, but the majority are problem free for much longer than any automatic.

I find it funny how everyone defends what they have, simply because it's what they have.

I personally don't care either way. I may have an auto in a trail rig in the future (trailered only). I would certainly not have one behind a Diesel in a tow rig though, unless I won the lottery and I was bombing the snot out of it for truck pulls.waytogo
