I probably won't find much support on this forum, but let me give you something to consider. Fuel taxes were intended to be a user fee for road maintenance and construction - those that used the roads the most and/or had the heaviest vehicles (and, consequently, bought the most fuel) paid the most tax to build and maintain the roads. As such, this is probably one of the most reasonable forms of taxation we see. Unfortunately, instead of a percentage tax, the Federal government and most states imposed a fixed amount per gallon ($0.20 Federal and $0.184 Texas state tax, IIRC) tax rate back in the 1990s. Since then, the cost to build and maintain roads has increased along with inflation, but the tax rate has not. Fuel prices have doubled, but the revenue per gallon from the fuel tax has remained constant. Consequently, Texas finds itself with inadequate funds to maintain the existing roads and to build the new roads required because of the population growth of our state. Given the refusal of the state government to increase the fuel tax rate (hey, it's political suicide to increase taxes), Texas is now wanting to make its new highways (and even some existing highways) toll roads. There's no magic here, folks - if new highways are going to be built, the money has to come from somewhere. Personally, I'd rather see a realistic increase in the state fuel tax than have to deal with toll roads anytime I want to travel. JM2CW YMMVopcorn: Rusty
