Heard of it, and yes you can use a 5W-40 in these motors just fine. All the 5 means is cold starting wieght. once the oil is up to operating temp there are thickening additives that make the oil act like a 40 weight.

Personally, if you are considering synthetic then how about a real synthetic? Amsoil is fully synthetic and capable of extended drains. Look up the MSDS on the Rotella. 99% petroleum products. Its just more refined than the normal Rotella T. Its not truely a Synthetic.

Amsoil Offers 3 different Diesel oils for our use,
    AME 15W40
HDD 5W30 - This is what I use
DEO 5W40 - Designed for the new 2007 emission vehicles.

Yeah and the higher price will off set some of the other normal wear and tear as well as bad mileage that goes with conventional oils I would check it about 5K if its a real or supposedly real syn oil.

Funny thing is for the price of the Rotella T Syn, you can add a few more bucks and go Amsoil and run it for 15K miles between oil and filter changes (if you use the Amsoil filters).

Just out of curiousity, what did your oil change cost?

    PM sent.

Thats about what I figured. I assume you did the change, right? I want to say a regular oil change at the dealer is 69.99.

Here in the shop I charge $100 for an oil change with filter and labor with Amsoil.

thats what i was wondering if you had to use amsoil filters or not, also i noticed soem of you guys had extra filters or something else from amsoil is this needed or is just the standard amsoil filter and oil sufficient

The reason the rating is for Amsoil filters is Amsoil knows how well their brand (co designed with Donaldson) filter, and with the oil they know there is ample filtering to keep the oil clean enough for use that long. With other filters its a gamble and you really don't totally know. Now, with the addition of a bypass filter, like the Amsoil BMK11, then you can go to oil analysis and do oil changes as needed bases on lab testing. This is purely optional of course.

You can use other quality filters like Wix with Amsoil but you will very likely need to change the filter twice between drains. It's just better to use an Amsoil or Endurance filter because you only have to use one filter the whole run time, it costs less, you know Amsoil stands behind their filters and their drain intervals using said filter, and you plain have to do less work!:D

I agree 100% with RJF and dieselnut. Amsoil makes great stuff, and I have used it in all my vehicles, and Im about to switch over to it in my Dodge. I became a dealer recently, and am trying to scrape my pennies together to become a sponsoring vendor here shortly. I can't say enough for Amsoil products.

In those situations it's hard, but you can do it. You just have to find a way. But, it can be alot of work. Either way, you tried. Congrats on that.
