Hello everyone, I recently hitched my trailer up to my 02 F350 7.3 4X4 at midnight to start a 4 hour drive out of town only to find that the running lights would not come on on the trailer but they were working properly on the truck, the brake light and the reverse also worked on the trailer. I opened the distrubution box and found the wire for the running lights and connected it directly to the batt on the trailer and they worked, I also looked under the dash to see if I could find a blown fuse but could not find one ( could be that I was so upset I hate missing a departure time) is there a seperate fuse for the trailer plug, and where can I get the fuse location chart. HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP
Wow No Help Wow I thought all of you diesel gurus out there would have given or shared some of their expert advice by now.
The last time I had my trailer out the lights on the trailer were flickering on and off a bit, I pulled the trailer plug out and then back in and made sure it was in there real good, no more problem. NOt sure if you have the same issue but make sure that plug is in real tight.
Thanks for the reply, but checked the plug. Theres a little catch on the cover that when you lift it and insert the plug it latches to the tail end of the plug ensureing thet it won't come out while driving. Would you happen to know what size fuse goes in slot 38? I think that's where the running lights fuse goes. Mine have a 20 in it now.
Trailer Running Lights Thanks LoudandProud, I have the same. I guess I'm going to have to take it to the shop, I tried to find the cause the other day for about 3 hours but could not find a short. But I know that it has to be a short somewhere because when I change the blown fuse and plug the trailer in, it pops the fuse every time.
cloudwalker your light problem is in your trailer, make sure tow unit and trailer are wired the same. most likely the plug, older style plugs would somtimes have a wire come loose enough to touch another wire even a single strand will make you crazy. make sure you have correct fuse amp. look along frame rails of the trailer to see if wire a has been mashed. I'm guessing it'a new trailer. Happy Hunting, GUY
Trailer Running Lights Not Workig Trailer was bought brand new in Oct. 06 along with the 02 F350 Super Duty 4X4 Dually, lights worked fine until around 10/07. When I hitch the trailer to truck and plug in the jack and the lights are on in the truck the fuse instantly blows, but the brake lights and turn signal still work. I think the problem is in the truck because I just disconnect the running light wire at the junction box on the trailer and connect directly to the trailer battery the lights work with no other problems. I have driven up to 6 hours like this with no problems.
Just a thought. We had a buddy borrow a trailer. His truck wiring wasn't standard so he changed the trailer plug wiring and didn't tell us. We found out the hard way.
I have had light problems on my flat bed also. What I found out is that the adapter, to change the trailers 6 pin to the trucks 7 pin, had a tab inside the plug adapter had bent to the point where it would not make contact with the truck harness. $17 later and it was all fixed. Even though the truck and adapter had a catch to prevent it from working its way out it still was not making contact. LT.
Well I would check the trailer plug on the truck with a tester to make sure there is 12v to the trl light pin . If ok then I see where you say when you disconect the light wire from the distrobution box [ Im assuming thats the one on the trailer] and hook it to a 12v battery on the trl. that they work ok. That would make me suspect there is a short between the box and the plug on the trl. [ the one that plugs into the truck] Try taking the end off and checking to make sure there isnt a wire slipped loose in there .....
Guys thanks for all the suggestions, I think that I finally found the problem. I had installed a set of flood lights on the hitch for hooking up at night, but it seems like I chose the wrong wire because the lights stop working shortly after. I never really paid it no attention because I just thought that because they only cost $9 at Harbor Freight that they stop working because of being cheap, but it appears that there was some sort of shortage when connected to the selected wire. I have now disconnected them and replaced the fuse and the lights seem to be working fine.
