That Snap-on Scanner is a good unit far as I know. When I was having transmission troubles, Modesto transmission was driving my truck around with that same scanner plugged in and it was giving live data of hydraulic pressures, selonoid operation, etc of the trans.

i work at a small independant shop. 4 techs, i mainly do all the diesel work on 1 ton vans to pickups to semi's, of course we do stuff kinda the oddball way though... the boss has bought us all the factory scanners that are all new, so that really helps us out vs otehr shops trying to work on these things.
i am factory trained on the 7.3L powerstroke, and am looking into getting certs on the 6.0l, as the main light duty diesel i see is a 7.3L IH motor wiether it be fords, or IH's.
we do work on gm and dodge, but not near as many.
yes, that is the scanner, BUT you need the proper connectors and cartriages for it and your application. you need to MAKE shure it will scan your 05(do new gm's use "CAN" (i forget, if so you NEED to make shure the scanner has CAN compliant updates or it will be useless.)
the only adaptor you really need is the OBD2 connector and the proper key's for your application. finding the cartriages will be the hard part.
and yes, that is a snap on brick scanner.

and as far as your problem.
your truck has 3 pedal position sensors. 2 count up in voltage, and one counts down in voltage and they always have to have the proper voltages or the truck sets a code and has a dead pedal for safety.
i can't remmeber if GM uses a IVDS idle validation switch also. it is like a break light switch that only allows current to pass fro mthe pdeal position switches to the PCM when this switch is depressed.
your switches should be pedal mounted.

this one here had a dead pedal problem ,but has also had numerous other problems as far as wiring. i hate fugged over trucks. i have towed this one to many times for wiring issues. fuel heater wire shorthed out in the harness. IPR plug end went bad, pedal went bad, CPS connector went bad(from waterpump)
working on them still attached to the truck sucks........

exactly, thats why the tuners that give codes are useless. they can't even attempt to do that.
now o nthe fancier versions of that scanner and the factory scanners the live data is MUCH quicker, gives more data, and can reocrd movies when you hit the button when the problem ocours. it then records the 10 previous seconds vefore you hit the button and the 15 seconds afterward so you can study what was going on when the fault happened.
i usually try to monitor it while driving, but in heavy traffic and a dimly lit screen in the sun its kinda scary. truck starts to swerve, and jerk while im trying to read, shiftm and move the scanner scroller while driving. looks liek a woman talking on her cell phone and applying makeup.

Hey Burt, if you're not sure about a tuner, you should drive my truck sometime. I think you'll decide you'd like one. :D

hahah I hear ya Marc waytogo
I haven't decided yet..but it seams like a fun thing to try if I get the budjet for it...

Thanks BB, you have helped me alot.
Yesterday after work I stoped for beer and when I got back in my truck the problem was present again...then gone about 5min later :doah:
I have been talking with the stealership and they have "never heard of that happening", "Bring it in and we will "Look"" ya right...maybe if I could drive it or idel it over there when it is happening but other than that...I'm not getting a engine light.
Hey would the computer spit out a code without turning on the engine light?

YES!waytogo When I was having governor pressure selonoid problems from too much hydraulic pressure from my valve body, it would throw a couple of different codes for to much voltage on the GPS, and communication codes between the ECM and PCM. I've never had a check engine light come on.

    ALL the time...................

locate your pedal position sensor, next time it does it with the truck running try tapping on the sensor with a screwdriver handle 3-4 times, and retrying. you may have to shut it off and restart, but if it works you have pretty much confirmed it that its bad.

the tap tests are GREAT things to practise, and VERY simple, and very fast. i do it all the time at work with mass air flow sensors. if they are not reading, give it a wack 2-3 times with a screwdriver handle and see if it is now reading. confirms that it has a bad maf in under 1 minute.
    same for electric fuel pumps.
today i towed in a big chevy box van with a 350 with the big wrecker. still no start when i got it to the shop. with it still o nthe wrecker i had a tech turn the key to start while i wacked the bottom of the fuel tank twice with my giant dead blow, and woah and behold it fired right up. saved me from having to scan it, pull the engine cover and check fuel pressure, then checking for power at the tank. saved me a good 20 mintues, and was a 100% corect diagnosis.

Well my rig is at the truck hospital and turns out the trottle position sensor is bad..I had a chance to hang out with the tech and he was using the Tech 2 scanner..all the GM docs and test points were telling him to replace the ECU but he is preety sure the TPS is the main issue and not the ECU...ofcoarse they did not have one instock so I have to wait until tonight to get my truck back.
The good thing is it finally failed and I ideled it to the stealership with the issue present so they actually had something to troubleshoot...
    Time will tell I suppose...

I still want to get a scanner for the future issue I amy have...
    later

PS ~ if anyone has a line on a used Snap-On MT2500 fpr sale let me knowwaytogo

Broke down and took it to the stealership huh...:doah: Oh well, I've been there tons of times, after all I drive a Dodge.rotfl No really, what stinks is when they either...

    1. Don't fix it the first time, second time, or third time... finally on the 3847576 trip back to the dealership they figure it out...

    2. My personal favorite... they screw something else up getting to or fixing your original problem.
